HVAC Zoning in Woodstock, GA
Zoning splits one system into separately controlled areas with dampers and its own thermostats, so the upstairs stops being ten degrees warmer than the downstairs. It is the answer when the real complaint is “one part of the house is never right,” not “the system is too small.”
It is a duct job as much as a controls job, which is why we measure before we quote it.
What it does
- Gives separate temperature control to areas that behave differently
- Fixes the two-story house where one floor is always wrong
- Lets a bonus room or a basement be conditioned only when it is used
- Works with a single system, so there is no second unit to maintain
Who it's for
- Two-story houses with one system and one thermostat
- Homes with a room over a garage or a west-facing wall of glass
- Houses with an unused basement or bonus room being conditioned all day
- Anyone considering a second system when the duct layout could carry zoning instead
What's included
- Static pressure and airflow measured per zone before anything is designed
- Damper placement worked out against the trunk layout you actually have
- Bypass avoided where possible — a bypass damper solves a pressure problem by creating an efficiency one
- Zone thermostats installed and the changeover logic explained rather than left on defaults
Usually added during a tune-up or an install
Questions people ask before booking
Does it need maintenance?
Dampers have motors and they do eventually fail, usually in one position. We check them at tune-ups; a zone that has quietly stopped modulating is otherwise very hard to notice.
Can it be added during another visit?
Zoning is scheduled on its own. It involves opening trunk lines, running control wiring, and a controls commissioning that is not a thirty-minute add-on to a tune-up.
Is zoning better than a second system?
It depends on the duct layout and on how differently the areas behave. Zoning is cheaper and there is only one piece of equipment to maintain, but it is limited by what the existing trunk can deliver to each zone. Where the areas need genuinely different schedules and the ductwork will not cooperate, a second system or a mini-split is the better answer, and we will say so.
