HVAC Questions, Answered

Straight answers about repair versus replace, tune-up timing, refrigerant, permits, financing, and what our technicians actually check.

Money — what it costs and why

  • Do you charge for a diagnostic visit?

Yes. There is a flat diagnostic fee for a service call and we tell you what it is on the phone before we dispatch, not when the technician is standing in your hallway. It is waived for Gold and Platinum Comfort Club members.

  • Should I repair this or replace it?

We give you both numbers on the same visit, every time. The honest rule of thumb we actually use: if the repair is more than about a third of a replacement and the system is past twelve, replacement usually wins. Under that, fix it. What moves that line is the refrigerant — an older refrigerant on a leaking coil changes the arithmetic a lot.

  • Is the Comfort Club a warranty?

No, and we are careful about that word. It is a month-to-month maintenance membership. It does not pay for parts or for replacement equipment; it covers scheduled tune-ups and gives you a discount on repairs and priority scheduling ahead of non-members. Cancel it with a phone call any time.

  • Do you offer financing?

Yes. The money is lent by a third party rather than by us and it is subject to credit approval, so the rate, the term and the approval are all theirs. The financing page sets out both options in full, with a worked example and with the part of the promotional one that people get caught by. Read it before you apply rather than after.

  • Are there tax credits or rebates on a new system?

Sometimes. Programs change constantly, have income and equipment requirements, and are run by the IRS, the state or your utility rather than by us. In this county the utility matters as much as the address — Cherokee alone is split between three electric membership corporations, so two neighbors can be eligible for different things. We will tell you which programs currently exist and point you at the source. We will not tell you what you will receive, and nothing we say is tax advice.

How the work is done

  • How often does a system actually need service?

Twice a year in this climate — cooling in spring, heating in fall. That is the entire reason the Comfort Club's Gold tier exists rather than being an upsell on the Silver one. Each visit is the 24-point Comfort Check, and you get the readings.

  • Do I need a permit, and what does it cost?

For equipment replacement, yes, everywhere we work, and it is in our price. Georgia has no statewide permit requirement — the state deletes the administrative chapter of the residential code that would create one — so it is entirely a local question, and the local answers differ. In our own county it is a flat-fee mechanical service permit issued only to a state-licensed technician. Be suspicious of anyone who tells you a changeout does not need one.

  • What areas do you cover?

Woodstock, Canton, Holly Springs, Ball Ground, Waleska, Jasper, East Cobb, Marietta, Roswell and Alpharetta. If you are just outside that, ask anyway — say where you are and we will tell you straight whether it is worth the trip. We would rather say no on the phone than take a job we cannot get back to.

Scheduling and getting here

  • How fast can you get here?

Often the same day during business hours. After hours, nights, weekends and holidays we run an emergency rotation and someone from here calls you back — not a call center in another state. We will give you a window rather than a promise about minutes, because a window is a thing we can actually keep.

  • Do I need to be home?

For a diagnostic, yes, or somebody who can let us in and tell us what it has been doing — the description is half the diagnosis. For a scheduled tune-up on an accessible system, often not. For an install, somebody should be there at the start and at the walkthrough at the end.

Equipment and refrigerant

  • Do you work on systems you didn't install?

Yes, on any residential brand. It is most of what we do, and the first visit is often where we find what somebody else left behind.

  • What is R-410A versus R-454B, and does it affect me?

New equipment now ships with a lower-global-warming refrigerant. If your existing system uses an older one it can still be serviced — but that refrigerant costs a great deal more than it used to, which changes the repair-versus-replace maths on an old leaking coil. It does not mean your system is obsolete and anybody telling you it does is selling something.

Something not here? Ask us, or call. We would rather answer it on the phone than have you guess.

Two service vans parked nose-out on a gravel lot at the end of the day, a shop bay door half open behind them.

Tell us what it's doing and we'll come look.

Three questions, an address, and a photo of the model plate if you can safely get one.
